Apple released two innovative products this year, the Apple iPhone and the Apple TV. The Apple TV is a set top device that is available right now for less than 400 dollars. It allows your computer and your television to “talk” to each other. This is a simplified way of saying it lets you put the videos you keep on your computer onto your television for everyone to see.

So who should buy this new product? If you are into downloading videos, television shows and movies onto your computer from the Internet, and want to share them with your friends and family, this set-top box is for you. If you make home movies using a digital camcorder, this little gadget is for you.

You’re probably wondering how the Apple TV works. You can use it with a Mac or PC. It works by synching with iTunes, which is also available on both platforms. Whatever video you can download to iTunes (or view in iMovie if you have a Mac) can be viewed using your Apple TV box.

Apple TV Technical Specs

The nice thing about Apple TV is that it is wireless - no clumsy cables to trip over. It is also very low profile – a slim little box no more than 1.1 inches high and 7.7 inches square. Like all Apple products it has a sleek, attractive design that will compliment any décor.

The Apple TV does more than just play movies. It also plays music videos and shows people your photos and slide show presentations made in iPhoto and Keynote. When you use the Apple TV with a Mac, if you can dream it, you can share it. It’s portable, too, so you can bring it with you to work presentations and wirelessly synch from your laptop to any TV the box is connected to.

If you are looking for a device that will also work as a DVR, this isn’t it. This first generation release does not synch with a TiVo or other DVR. Apple has not said whether they will add that as a feature in later generations or not, though I hope so. Equally attractive would be the ability to use the Apple TV as a DVR itself. That is definitely something I would subscribe to.

All in all the reasonable price tag, sleek design and multiple uses make this a worthy product release from Apple. This is the perfect device for me. I have 3 days to wait. My nice sound system will now have all my music and I can abandon tv service all together. This is my first apple purchase because I hate them. I have been importing all of my content into Itunes storing everything on a 400GB HD. There are only a couple things I don't like about Itunes. The store isn't too bad for tv shows if I can't acquire them other ways. As for not supporting HD in the itunes store there are many sites offering HD xvid content that can be converted to h.264. The only thing I need is NBA League Pass support in the Itunes store.
